Centro Corazón de María was started in 2002 and is a fully bi-lingual agency located on the South Fork of Long Island. The center serves the poorest and most recently arrived immigrants in the area. These newcomers have varied levels of education ranging from no school to 6th grade, with very few having completed secondary school. A large number of the immigrants they serve originate from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Ecuador, Honduras, Costa Rica and Colombia. Centro Corazón de María provides language classes, skills classes and a wide range of advocacy services to the immigrant population. The center also participates in political advocacy at the local, state and national level in order to improve immigration laws that affect their community. Currently, in partnership with the local volunteer advocacy group “Neighbors in Support of Immigrants” , Centro Corazón de María is invested in pressing for a language access policy and greater diversity in hiring to be implemented in their local town. The organization is often contacted by health providers, lawyers, school personnel, pastoral associates, media professionals and immigration rights advocates for opinions and ideas about the Hispanic community in Hampton Bays and Eastern Suffolk County. They work to make room for the voices of the immigrants themselves in these dialogues.
